WEEK 2
This week we started by learning about the generation of computers which include the following;
First generation computers(1940-1950) which generally uses the vacuum tube as their processors.
Second generation (1950-1964) which uses transistors and high level languages.
Third generation from 1964-1974 which used integrated circuits(IC).
Fourth generation (1974-present) which uses VLSI and ULSI and combines millions of transistors.
Fifth generation for now and the future and is based on artificial intelligence.
Mention was made about computer architecture which is all about the computer design and computer processing power which is all about its speed and power.
we also high lighted about the categories of computers which includes; Embedded computers, Mobile computers, Personal computers, Mid range servers, Mainframe computers and Super computers.
We also know that the following components are contained in the system unit; Motherboard, Processor, Central Processing Unit(CPU), And the CPU also has the following components: the control unit -CU, Arithmetic Logic Unit - ALU. The architecture of the CPU and its function was also highlighted.The control unit also has the Registers,and Main Memory which includes both the RAM (random access memory) and the ROM (read only memory). We also dicusse the volatility of the memory. We wrapped up the week with another lecture session where the computer Hardware Basics where discussed.
